7 ways to help this summer
July and August can be tough months for Nova Scotians struggling with food insecurity. Here’s how you can help!
1. Get backpacks to kids
We heard from Kim at Hants North Community Food Bank recently, who said as soon as school’s out, parents start worrying about providing school supplies for the next year. Help us alleviate those worries. We’ve purchased 2,300 backpacks and need your financial support to get them on the road to our member food banks. Kim says, “Parents cry when they receive them. That’s how impactful they are.” Donate now.
2. Plant a row for us
There’s nothing tastier than fresh, summer veggies for dinner! Donate some of your harvest and help folks have greater access to healthy, delicious food. What a gift!
3. Have a lemonade stand
The Gallant family saw lots of smiles when they sold cookies and lemonade in their neighbourhood AND raised enough money to provide 600 meals’ worth of food! We love to know how you’re helping Nova Scotians in need, so register your fundraiser on our site.
4. Organize a community food drive or fundraiser
Recently, the lovely folks at TranscenDental fired up the grill and did a BBQ for our cause. They raised $1,738!! Wow! Thinking about getting something together? The sky’s the limit and we’ve got lots of resources on our website to help you out.
5. Pick up something extra
Anthony Abbass generously used his birthday money this year to go out and purchase food to donate! Next time you’re grocery shopping, consider buying a couple of extra items to donate. If your kids join you on this weekly errand, make them a part of it. Need some guidance on what to give? Check out our much-needed food list. (Hot tip: Hit the store on a BOGO day!)
6. Speak up
This isn’t limited to the summer season and we will always find any way to fit this message in because anyone can do it. The myths and misconceptions around hunger and poverty persist and we all need to do our part to inform ourselves and start speaking out. Visit our advocate page.
7. Volunteer
Time is one of the most meaningful things we have to give. We love our volunteers and our doors are always open to new ones! Learn more.
