Spring Appeal

Provide a neighbour with food support today and be part of the long-term solutions for tomorrow.

First of all, we want to thank you. Because of the support of Nova Scotians like you, we were able to distribute 2.9 million kg of food to the 140 food banks, meal programs, and shelters that make up the Feed Nova Scotia network in 2024, all while diverting 1.3 million kilograms of safe, consumable food from landfills. This was possible thanks to compassionate individuals, groups, and organizations from across this province.

We also want to apologize. We are sorry to be back here again, asking for more help. We are sorry that we don’t have better news for you about the number of food insecure Nova Scotians, and that we don’t have reports of anything better on the horizon. And while we have been able to make a positive difference in the lives tens of thousands of people experiencing food insecurity in Nova Scotia, we are sorry to report that we have seen record high food bank access for 6 months straight.

The answer to food insecurity is not more food. Food banks are not the solution, and charities will not fix these issues. Nova Scotians being unable to meet their most basic needs every single day is a political choice. These record-breaking numbers are a direct result of the government failing to address their own responsibilities. It is due to the policy choices made by every level of government that we have no choice but to keep asking you for support.

Today we have two asks for you. One is to consider a one-time donation, or if you’re able, to become a monthly donor. A monthly donation means you’re supporting Feed Nova Scotia’s member network, a group of 140 food banks, meal programs, and shelters across the province, as they work to address the immediate need for food support.

The second is maybe the most important thing we have ever asked from you: reach out to your government representatives. Tell them we need affordable housing, adequate income for every stage of life, and increased social assistance rates. Tell them people need enough income to be able to live, to buy groceries for their families. Tell them that this is not sustainable, and this is not what Nova Scotia should look like.

We don’t want to be here again next year. We want change at all levels of government, and we need it now.
