What to Expect

Take a deep breath, we’re in this together. It's hard to ask for help, but we're here to support you.

Each of our member agencies operates a little differently, but here's some information to give you an idea of what to expect when you visit a food bank.

WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

You’ll need one piece of valid ID for each person in your household and, when possible, a piece of mail with your name and home address on it. That’s it. If you don’t have a fixed address, call us at (902) 457-1900 and we can help.

WHAT YOU'LL BE ASKED

A volunteer will ask you to fill out a form. If you'd like to see the form now, click below and take a look. You can print a copy and take it with you, but it's not necessary. Food banks will have the forms on hand. Everyone accessing a food bank needs to complete the individual support form. If you have dependents you will also have to complete the family support form.

You might also be asked to voluntarily share other information. Our position is that no one needs to know your financial or personal situation to decide if you'll receive support.

HOW OFTEN YOU CAN GO AND WHAT YOU'LL RECEIVE

Each food bank is a little different, but on average you can go once a month, and you'll receive 3 to 5 days of food per person in your household.

FINDING A FOOD BANK NEAR YOU

Use our Find Food tool, and if there isn’t a food bank in your area, call 211 or visit 211 and select ‘Food Support’. If you have questions, get in touch and we'll be happy to walk you through it. Or visit our FAQ for more information.

PROVIDING FEEDBACK

Every food bank, meal program, and shelter operates a little differently, but each one is staffed with caring people who aim to provide a safe and respectful environment for those they support. All of our member agencies commit to upholding the Ethical Food Banking Code.  If you'd like to share any concerns you might have, we always appreciate feedback. Fill out our feedback form.
